| One of the exceptional strengths of the Belmont Public Schools is the high quality of the teaching staff, who are committed to continuous professional development. As part of the five year licensure renewal process, each professional in the system is responsible for preparing an Individual Professional Development Plan. These plans outline the professional development activities in which staff will participate over five years. Staff may choose from courses offered by experts, sponsored by Belmont’s Staff Development Council or choose to enroll in courses, seminars, and conferences offered by colleges and universities, professional organizations, and other institutions. In offering courses the Belmont Public School System provides programs that will enhance student learning and lead to improvements in student achievement. Sample program themes include: literacy, technology integration, assessment, and differentiated instruction.

To attain Professional Teacher Status, teachers are strongly encouraged to take Studying Skillful Teaching, which focuses on the complexity and importance of teaching and the many skills required in the craft of teaching. The course is generally offered in July (full days) with additional classes in the fall (after school). Please consult the Staff Development Handbook for details.
In addition, new teachers participate in a teacher induction program. Part of the induction program is a series of meetings throughout the school year, sponsored by the Superintendent. A key component of teacher induction is the Mentor Program whereby more experienced veteran teachers, trained in mentoring, are matched with teachers new to the Belmont system. Over forty teachers have been trained as mentors and remain active in the Mentor Program.
