Remote Learning for Grades PreK-8 Continue into Next Week

Remote Learning for Grades PreK-8 Continue into Next Week - Superintendent's Bulletin #18 - School Opening Fall 2020

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Staff:

We are writing to inform you remote learning for grades PreK-8 will extend to Monday, October 26, and Tuesday, October 27. Our expectation at this time is for hybrid in-person learning to resume at the elementary level on Wednesday, October 28, and at the middle school level on Thursday, October 29. The October 20 email sent to families initially informed you of this delay. Your principals will communicate if there will be any impact to cohort schedules.

The reason for these additional days is to ensure the accuracy of the data. This is a time consuming process, and we do not want to rush.

In an effort to keep the public informed, BALA representative Keith Prata and Belmont Facilities Director Steven Dorrance gave an update on our buildings at the School Committee meeting on October 20. At that meeting, BALA clarified minor discrepancies in the data entry process discovered during their second walk-through of the school buildings in early October. Accompanying BALA was the Facilities Director, school leaders, and educators. BALA maintained high confidence the preliminary air exchange data was satisfactory to open schools, and that the minor discrepancies were not adversely affecting our school population.

In these last three days, the following steps were taken:

  • BALA walked through the buildings to review and assess the allocation of resources to ensure appropriate air exchange
  • In an abundance of caution, we implemented a peer review process
  • Our Director of Facilities will review the data with BALA
  • Principals will do a building-based review of the data
  • The review will be shared with our educators’ health and wellness committee
  • We will have meetings with all parties in the review process

We expect the review, sharing of data, and meetings will take two days. We are still awaiting the final report and executive summary from BALA. When the School Department receives this, we will submit it to our stakeholders.
