Important Information about Transition to In-Person Learning

Dear Belmont K-4 families,

I hope that you and your children have been enjoying the spring weather this week.

As we prepare for our full return to in-person learning on April 5th, our teachers need some dedicated time to prepare for this significant transition. In order to ensure that we start this new phase of learning with our building and staff well prepared, we have decided that next week on Tuesday, March 30 and Thursday, April 1, the afternoons will be asynchronous only for remote and in-person students. Live and in-person instruction will end at 11:45 when the children are dismissed and teachers will provide asynchronous work for the afternoon. Students who usually stay full-day will also be dismissed at 11:45.

There are several important pieces of work that will happen in these afternoons:

  1. Our teachers and other building staff members will be preparing each classroom, office and learning space for the larger numbers of students who will be attending school in April. Among other things, we need to measure and distance all desks for the specific number of students in each new class, install tents, prepare eating areas, set up gyms/cafeterias/large spaces for new activities, and transform some formerly administrative areas into student learning spaces.
  2. Our teachers will be spending time together to learn about students who are new to their classroom and do a thorough hand-off of any information necessary to ensure a smooth transition for students.
  3. Some of our Specials teachers - such as music and physical education teachers - need to work on new curricula that will ensure student safety in this pandemic environment.
  4. Our Specialists (ELE, Special Education, and Interventionists) need to revise their schedules to ensure that children’s needs are met in appropriately sized groups during times that align with their new classroom schedules.
  5. On Wednesday afternoon, as you know, teachers will be engaged in conferences with parents.

There will be a webinar hosted by McLean Hospital to support families next Thursday, April 1 at 7pm, and each building principal will be hosting a parent information session next Wednesday at 6:30.

As always, our teachers and staff appreciate your patience and consideration during this year of many changes. Please feel free to reach out to me with any thoughts or concerns.

Sincerely,

John P. Phelan
Superintendent of Schools
