Retirement Plans

Belmont Public Schools employees do not pay into Social Security, but instead make mandatory contributions into one of three retirement systems. Payroll deductions begin with the first pay check, regardless of whether enrollment forms have been received.

The retirement system in which a Belmont Public Schools employee participates is determined by your category of employment and the number of hours you work per week in that category:

  • DESE-certified educators (Principals, Central Office Administrators, Unit A & B employees) who are employed in a position of 0.5 FTE or more – Massachusetts Teachers’ Retirement System (MTRS).

You must complete and submit this Payroll Information Form as part of your hiring paperwork. You will receive an MTRS Enrollment Assignment Sheet from BPS payroll in the mail. Please complete your registration upon receipt.

  • DESE-certified educators (Principals, Central Office Administrators, Unit A & B employees) who are employed in a position of less than 0.5 FTE – Massachusetts Deferred Compensation SMART Plan (OBRA).

You must complete and submit this OBRA enrollment form as part of your hiring paperwork.

  • BPS employees in non-teaching positions who work less than 20 hours per week –Massachusetts Deferred Compensation SMART Plan (OBRA).

You must complete and submit this OBRA enrollment form as part of your hiring paperwork.

  • BPS employees in non-teaching positions who work 20 hours or more per week – Town of Belmont Retirement System.

You must complete this New Member Enrollment form and submit to the Town of Belmont Retirement Office to enroll - please contact Robert SooHoo or Ryan Horan at 617-993-2792 with any questions, and to make an appointment to submit your form.

Please find the employment category above to which you belong:
