Philosophy of Education

At Belmont Middle School, we embody the spirit of a middle level education - identity exploration and development, expanding social horizons and connecting with others, learning about and regulating emotions, and finding our place in the world. We aim to achieve this through rigorous skill development within a relevant, innovative, and culturally and linguistically affirming curriculum.

Our community of support is built upon the ethos that every student gets what they need, and our tailored approach to personalized instruction advantages every student to take ownership of their learning, advocate for themselves, and engage deeply in critical and creative thinking. This is possible through partnership with families and the wider community, a belief in our personal responsibility and collective potential, and our educators - practitioners who are professional in every aspect of their work, who are committed to every student in their charge, and who inspire every student by cultivating a supportive, challenging, equitable, and inclusive environment for all.

The Belmont Middle School serves approximately 654 students in grades seven and eight. There are 95 total staff at the middle school.

Belmont Middle School opened for the first time to students on September 6, 2023 as a shared campus with Belmont High School. Using a team-based model, we are able to roll out a network of support for each individual student that centers on communication, resources, data, and accountability. Our pod structure provides students with a small school feel that emphasizes relationship building, collaboration, intercultural understanding and respect while also enjoying large school resources like our library media center, auditorium, black box theater, maker spaces, field house, and extensive complex of outdoor athletic and natural spaces.

Parents may elect to have their middle school student attend a structured after-school program for a fee. This program allows time for students to do their homework and participate in other activities.

Students may participate in a variety of extracurricular activities and clubs. Past activities have included theater arts, school newspaper, yearbook, math team, after-school sports, computer club, Science Olympiad, ecology club, chess club, and numerous instrumental and choral ensembles. The school also has an organized student government with elected positions.

Belmont Middle School sponsors interscholastic teams for seventh and eighth grade boys and girls in cross-country in the fall and basketball in the winter.
